Outreach

The Düssel Cup has had an outreach program since 2011. In 2016, it was awarded the Compass Pin.

In the meantime, we have welcomed over 100 participants to Düsseldorf through the outreach program. These came from Russia, Bosnia, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland, among others. For the 10th anniversary, we also had a team from Uganda and a participant originally from the Gaza Strip at the start.

Once again in 2024 we are offering an outreach program. Find all information for your application here.

Outreach – what is it?

In many regions of Europe, including countries in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, queer people are strongly discriminated. Discrimination and violence against people who want to openly live their lives that deviate from the hetero-normative image of society with regard to sexual orientation and/or gender identity are not uncommon. This fear can best be countered together, e.g. through sports. Even though in many places it is officially forbidden to found queer sports clubs, there are numerous initiatives and groups that make it possible to practice sports among like- minded people even in problematic regions.

We want to support this with our outreach program by promoting / supporting the participation of individual and team athletes in the Düssel Cup. We subsidize the participation and partly the journey, help with the visa and with the catering and accommodation.

For many of our guests it is an important experience to take part in competitions in a large community under tolerant and non-discriminatory conditions and they can gain a lot of strength and courage for their own lives at home.

The program is financed by donations and from the tournament fees. The higher the budget is and the more it is filled, the more athletes can be supported.
